Extreme by Design

Extreme by Design

In celebration of World Creativity and Innovation Week (15–22 April), InnovUS will be focusing on the impact that good ideas can have on the day-to-day lives of everyday people.

To this end, a Mavericks event will be held at the Neelsie cinema on 17 April. The evening will start with the first screening of the film Extreme by Design outside the USA. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion on how we, as South Africans, can have a positive impact on our own communities.

Extreme by Design is a documentary that follows a band of college students who design and build products to solve the seemingly intractable problems of the world’s poor. One student’s team must create a breathing device to keep babies in Bangladesh from dying of pneumonia. Another seeks a way to store drinking water for Indonesian villagers.

The film begins on the first day of a Stanford University course in Entrepreneurial Design for Extreme Affordability, and ends a year later when one student group returns to Asia to test their device in the field amid plans to launch a start-up. Click here to view the trailer.
