Gert van Deventer selected to participate in Stellenbosch University's PASS Staff Blended Mobility Programme

(LU) in Lund, Sweden in mid-September 2023 having been selected to participate in SU’s
PASS Staff Blended Mobility Programme. The focus was on professional development,
learning of new skills, job shadowing and the gaining of inter-cultural skills and
international experience.
During this visit, Gert participated in selected intercultural competencies presentations
and activities at LU’s Division of External Relations, as well as gained insight into LU
Innovation’s, LU’s intellectual property office, function. Similar to SU, LU also attaches
great value to research and innovation. However, due to LU’s funding structure (being
reliant on government, EU, and private sources for its income streams) and ownership of
IP vesting in LU researchers (the principle of professor’s privilege), LU Innovation focuses
on societal impact and sustainability, rather than commercialisation. LU Innovation, like
SU’s Innovation and Commercialisation, also has trouble in creating awareness of its
institutional role and to cultivate a better understanding of IP. To overcome these
obstacles, LU Innovation has implemented selected strategies which can potentially
also serve as incentives for SU’s Innovation and Commercialisation.
