Innovus honours its inventors Celebrating Stellenbosch University’s Researchers achievements

Innovus, Stellenbosch University’s university-industry interaction and innovation company, acknowledged and awarded their inventors with special awards and certificates at the end of November 2019. This event will now become an annualevent in the Innovus calendar.


According to Nolene Singh, technology transfer manager at Innovus, the event was a celebration of their researcher achievements for 2019. “We recognized researchers who had patents granted in 2019  by awarding them with a certificate of acknowledgement and gave special awards to SU’s faculties for their contribution towards intellectual property development and commercialisation.”


 The faculty awards were as follows:


The Faculty Award for Start-Up for2019 went to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The company AxioVR started from this faculty in 2019. AxioVR is a virtual reality software company that aims to address the growing local and international need of developing virtual reality paradigms for both research and industry. 


The Faculty of Engineering received the Faculty Patent Award for 2019 for the 20 patents that were granted to them in this year.


The Faculty Disclosure Award for 2019 went to the Faculty of AgriScience. The faculty submitted 14 invention disclosures in 2019.


The Faculty Funding Award for 2019 went to the Faculty of Science. The development funding they brought in for the pollination optimized beehive project from Koppert Biological Systems amounted to R824 000.


The Start-up Excellence Award for 2019 went to CubeSpace (Pty) Ltd – a company that design, build, test and support innovative, high quality, miniaturised satellite components, with a strong focus on control systems.


Researchers are a valuable asset to the University and we at Innovus appreciate the hard work and commitment of these researchers in making Stellenbosch University’s innovation matter.  We look forward to celebrating these excellent researchers achievements in 2020.
